Near the hotel is a branch of the Jim Thompson Silk Company, a very expensive and famous brand name store in Thailand. At this store you can easily spend over $100 on a scarf. Although, it might possibly the most beautiful scarf you will ever see. The store also specializes in ties and purses.
It leads to the question….who is Jim Thompson? He was an American, from Pennsylvania, born in 1906. He came to Thailand with the military in 1940. He loved it so much he decided to stay. Eventually he got into silk trading and made a considerable amount of money.
At one point he received a horoscope that indicated that his 61st year would be very unlucky. In 1967, on a visit to Malaysia, he went for a walk and never returned. Nobody knows what happened to him, but his company continues to thrive in Thailand today and his house, which was created by combining six traditional style Thai houses together with Western influences, is a living museum today. The gardens surrounding the house are amazing!
