The Ancient City

Today we visited the Ancient City, which is located outside Thailand. One amazing part of the experience was our tour guide for the day, named Tan. He was informative, funny, and had an excellent attitude (by staying easygoing, but keeping the pace moving).

The Ancient City was created as a way to share the ruins, monuments, and ways of life from each of Thailand’s 77 provinces without leaving Bangkok. There are many replica wats, statues, houses, and more. There are even replica floating and land marketplaces.

It is a little like a larger, rural Epcot Center, but with a concentration on older structures, a few of which we will see the real versions of during the next few weeks. Most, however, are spread out over Thailand, and the opportunity to see 1/3 or ¼ sizes replica at the Ancient City is as close as we will get to experiencing them in person (at least on this trip).

In some ways the Ancient City is a little odd, but in others it is simply fantastic. It was very hot today, but the combination of tram ride, walking, shaded areas, cool beverages, and excellent food kept up my spirits in the heat. The chilled towels headed to us on the bus were also incredibly refreshing after the long tour.
