Walking Streets and Markets

The markets we’ve visited in Thailand have been incredible. Most of the larger market areas are regular streets during the day, but crazed shopping spaces at night. In the afternoon, market vendors carry large canvas bags filled with their merchandise and stands and set up shop.

The night market across from our Bangkok hotel sells a lot of look-alike products. For example, you can find yourself a handbag that looks identical to the Jimmy Choo you could never afford. There are also large numbers of watches, shirts, shoes, jewelry, and more.

The markets in the north, near Chiang Mai, had a much larger selection of traditional Thai goods. This includes Thai style pants, which are very large and require a folding over at the waist, embroidered purses and wallets, and wall hangings.

If I am to tell the truth, I would tell you that I have already purchased an incredible amount of “stuff.” I am already getting nervous about getting it all back to Chicago…as long as the markets in Vietnam are not as good as the ones here I should be okay. If they are, well, then I am going to have some serious luggage to get home!
