The Temple of Literature

In Hanoi, we had the chance to visit the Temple of Literature, which was founded in 1070 by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong and dedicated to Confucius. Since its original establishment, other portions were added to the Temple of Literature during the Ly and Tran Dynasties between 1010-and 1400. It is known to be the first university in Vietnam, and the area was used to educate the children of the elite.

Currently, the Temple of Literature is a peaceful park. It does house a large number of giant carved tortoises. Legend says that rubbing the head of the tortoises and praying at the Temple will give a student good luck in school. Although you are no longer allowed to touch the original carvings and must, instead use a bronze substitute, the Temple was crawling with students the day we visited, since it happened to be the day before huge national exams were taking place.
